World Water Day 2024

Written By: Teacher Nora

Every year on the 22nd of March, World Water Day is observed internationally.

We at Appleland Montessori Childcare Centre celebrated World Water Day on 22 March 2024 with a water rationing exercise.

Focusing on the theme of “Make Every Drop Count”, the centre stops all the children from using water taps. The children used water they had filled in pails to wash their hands, and wash the toys, etc.

This exercise was done to develop a greater awareness of the importance of natural resources, and learn responsibility, care, and respect for the environment.

Not only children, our staff and teachers explored different ways and learning as to how to move Singapore towards water sustainability.

With this event, the children internalize the water conservation tips and cultivate good habits for life.

Throughout the week, the children participated in a series of water-saving activities, including craft work, reading, and sharing, besides class discussions on water conservation and how to prepare water rationing.

Washing our hands with the water that was filled in the pail.

Watering our plants in our school’s garden using recycled empty bottles to water not using the water hose or just pouring the water out anywhere.

Washing our toys with the water that we had used to wash our hands.

The younger toddlers wiped our outdoor slides with the water that was used to wash the toys.

It was a day of fun-filled and meaningful experience for these young children to play their part in saving water.

It’s never too early to teach these young children about water conservation – it is a lifelong skill. As with most things, water conservation is all about setting a good example. Practice good water-saving strategies on a day-to-day basis so that these children will follow our lead.
